Hunter Bass is a 27 year old who was born and bred in Wilson. Once graduating High School, he attended Wilson Community College and studied Fire Protection Technology, the perfect precursor to joining the Contentnea Fire Department.

Hunter is engaged and a proud Dog Dad to a Lab and 3 Dalmations, the classic and quintessential Fire House Dog of yesteryear.

At 15 years old, Hunter’s fire fighting adventures began with the Contentnea Fire Department. While in High School he was asked to join their Junior Program despite no prior training. With time and on the job training plus his later college degree with Fire Protection Technology he was sure to rise up the ranks. He is now the Contentnea Fire Department Captain and has been for 6 years. Being with the Contentnea Fire Department for about 12 years, he has seen major shifts in growth and said, “I have seen where this department has come from in past years. I’m very proud of the people here and countless hours they have put in to help this department grow.”

When he is not fighting fires with Contentnea he does so for the city of Goldsboro, at the Goldsboro Fire Department where he has been a part of their team for 5 years. When he is not out fighting fires, Hunter can be found doing some of his favorite things, hunting or fishing.

Josh Thomas, a 33 year old Baltimore, Maryland native moved to Wilson when he was just a child. After graduating High School in 2003 he found himself back in Baltimore. He worked with their inner city ministries for 2 years before moving back again to Wilson. He started working for Wilson’s own Great Gardens Nursery and Landscape where he still works as a foreman today.

Josh is happily married to his lovely wife Kathryn Thomas and together they have two beautiful girls.

In 2012 Josh’s life long dream came true when he joined the Contentnea Volunteer Fire Department and became a firefighter. Although he started with zero fire training, that didn’t last long. He soon completed his firefighter certification along with many other certifications through the fire department. After a short two years, in 2014 he was awarded Firefighter of the Year. Then in 2016 he was voted in as the Lieutenant for the department and one year later he was voted the 2017 Officer of the Year. In 2018 Josh ran 51% of the Contentnea Fire Department’s calls and had over 150 hours of training. He continues to expand his knowledge and training on a regular basis by participating in the various classes and trainings hosted by the Contenea Fire Department.
